Ohio Consumers
for Health Coverage Statement on the Future of Health Care
Reform Following the Massachusetts Senate Vote
The following is a
statement from Cathy Levine and Col Owens, Co-Chairs of Ohio
Consumers for Health Coverage (OCHC), on the future of federal
health care reform with the election of Republican Scott Brown
to fill the Senate seat of the late Senator Ted Kennedy.
“The last thing Ohioans need is for the
Massachusetts vote to derail health care reform. We have
consistently advocated for a bi-partisan solution to the health
care crisis and continue to call on Republicans to join with the
Democrats to do the right thing for Ohioans who are uninsured,
who are struggling to pay for coverage or medical bills, and who
are excluded from coverage because of pre-existing conditions.
Both the House and Senate plans accomplish a great deal by
expanding coverage, lowering costs, and improving quality of
care.

T.R. Reid
addresses a crowd of 200 at our Cleveland Event!

“The design of a health care
system is reflective of our moral values. No other country lets
people go bankrupt for medical bills."
Renowned journalist TR Reid, who
wrote the PBS documentary, “Sick Around the World,” wanted to
understand how and why other industrialized nations are able to
provide quality health care to all of its people, while spending
far less than the US does, with its 48 million uninsured.
At UHCAN Ohio’s Cleveland fundraiser, Reid gave us a preview of
his upcoming book, The Healing of America: A Global Quest for
Better, Cheaper, Fairer Care - a riveting account of his
research adventures, what he learned, and what he came to
understand.
Speaking in the magnificent
sanctuary of Trinity Cathedral, Reid, a devout Roman Catholic,
stated that the venue was most appropriate, because health care
is a deeply moral issue.
