About Us
We are building a statewide organization that empowers people and organizations within communities to be involved in re-shaping the health care system. We do this through education, information referrals, policy analysis, community organizing, and participation in policy change. Working toward the goal of health care for all, we address a number of critical issues, including:
Our mission The Universal Health Care Action Network of Ohio (UHCAN Ohio) is a statewide organization working for high quality and affordable health care for all Ohioans through education and grassroots organizing. UHCAN Ohio is needed Everyone should have access to quality care in a system that is accountable to the communities it serves. Many Ohioans do not. Sampling of Ohio's Health Care Need Eleven percent of Ohioans were uninsured in 1998, roughly 1.3 million: 2/3 were uninsured for one year or more; nearly 1/2 were uninsured for 3 years or more. An estimated 2.2 million Ohioans have no prescription drug coverage. In 2000, Ohio residents paid some $4.25 billion to brand name drug companies. According to a 1999 report of the Ohio Department of Health, more than half of Ohio's counties have medically underserved areas. How we work 1. We organize in local communities around health care needs they identify. 2. We advocate on behalf of Ohio's working poor families, older individuals, immigrants, people with disabilities and other vulnerable groups. 3. We campaign for needed statewide reform, like affordable prescription drugs and health care coverage for low-income families. 4. We work with hospitals and other health care providers to secure free care for the uninsured. 5. We build networks of health care activists across the state. UHCAN Ohio has offices in Cleveland ,Columbus and Cincinnati.
