T.R. Reid addresses a crowd of 200 at our Cleveland Event!

T.R. Reid 6-20-09 Cleveland Ohio, photo by Jon Groner.

“The design of a health care system is reflective of our moral values. No other country lets people go bankrupt for medical bills."

Renowned journalist TR Reid, who wrote the PBS documentary, “Sick Around the World,” wanted to understand how and why other industrialized nations are able to provide quality health care to all of its people, while spending far less than the US does, with its 48 million uninsured.

At UHCAN Ohio’s Cleveland fundraiser, Reid gave us a preview of his upcoming book, The Healing of America: A Global Quest for Better, Cheaper, Fairer Care - a riveting account of his research adventures, what he learned, and what he came to understand.

Speaking in the magnificent sanctuary of Trinity Cathedral, Reid, a devout Roman Catholic, stated that the venue was most appropriate, because health care is a deeply moral issue.

About OCHC (A coalition convened by UHCAN Ohio)

Ohio Consumers for Health Coverage (OCHC) combines the forces of health care consumers and advocates for access to health care, to create a united consumer voice for health care reform.

Ohio’s policy makers and stakeholder groups are working on proposals to expand access to affordable health care.  Businesses, hospitals, insurers and other stakeholders are actively protecting their interests. But who is looking out for consumers?

We need a strong, united consumer voice to make sure reforms meet the needs of all Ohioans.

We need state and local consumer organizations and individual advocates to get involved! Click here to learn about our principles and strategies for reform.

On Tuesday, April 21, 2009, the Small Business Network on Health Care and the Small Business Majority released their report on a survey of 300 Ohio small business owners’ views on health care reform. The survey shows that the small business community sees health care reform as necessary to get the economy back on track, and health insurance as a significant barrier to entrepreneurship.

Ohioans Tell Governor Strickland to Fix It Now!

Health Care Consumers Deliver Petitions to Governor’s Office

Columbus OH—Consumer health care advocates armed themselves with tools in their quest to make health care affordable and available to all. Wearing construction hats, carrying hammers, and raising construction signs, consumers gathered at the statehouse to deliver more than 5,500 petition signatures to Governor Strickland calling on him to make health care reform his top priority.

“Ohioans cannot wait any longer for relief from sky rocketing health care costs, unfair insurance rules, and lack of access to care,” said Cathy Levine, Co-chair of Ohio Consumers for Health Coverage. “We call on Governor Strickland to help fix Ohio’s economy by fixing health care now!”
